Unordinary gears Inkscape's extension

We've made a new extension for creating unordinary gears such those are in the video:


Usage

1. Draw the first arbitrary gear.
2. Open Extensions -> Render -> Unordinary gears
3. Fill in teeth number for first and second gear. (This numbers are relative to each other, so instead of 14:28 you can enter 1:2.)
4. Enter number of copies. The bigger this number the smoother will be the gear. For the preview 50 copies will be enough, for the final render it could be about 360.
5. Enter the distance between the centers of the gears.

Press apply :)

So you should get something like this:

Then enter into created group (double click on it), select all paths Ctrl+A and make boolean add Ctrl+Shift+"+":

Now break path apart Ctrl+Shift+K and delete everything except the inner path:

Your extraordinary gear is ready :hehehe:!

You can make it a little smoother, go to node editing mode F2 select all nodes Ctrl+A and make all segments straight (a button at the node editing menu).

Install

Windows

Unpack and copy all the files to the following directory Program Files\Inkscape\share\extensions\ and restart Inkscape.

Linux

Unpack and copy all the files to the following directory /usr/share/inkscape/extensions/ and restart Inkscape.

You can easily create gear for "gear" made of several bearings. Just draw first gear that looks like several circles. And create unordinary gear for it.

You should do exactly what it says.
Select only one path :).

I've not tested that Preveiw thing, and added this option to make possible making changes to the drawing while extension's dialog is opened.

So better do not touch it :). Just create arbitrary path that will be used as a first gear, select it and make corresponding gear for your path.

I've got to write a bug report/wish to Inkscape's developers to make able changing the scene without Preview field...

See Bug #649441 in Inkscape: “Extension dialogs shouldn't default to modal

I have been using the second version of the patch for quite some time with builds from Inkscape trunk, without noticing any regressions. Note though that most extensions that ship with Inkscape have the 'Preview' option set for the extension dialog. The extension 'Text > Replace font…' is one of the few exceptions.

I have been playing with unordinary gears and wanted to see if there is a way to make a primary gear shape for the outer gear then make some small gears to fit inside. I have not yet been able to make any usable gears from the plugin yet but am still working on it. Any suggestions or hits would be appreciated.

I'm not sure about that. But if you have profile you can make a pulley manually.
Just draw one tooth and then put aside center of rotation and make necessary amount of teeth.
